Umberto Lenzi (born August 6, 1931), is an Italian film director who was very active in low budget crime films, peplums, spaghetti westerns, war movies, cannibal films and giallo murder mysteries (in addition to writing many of the screenplays himself).

Life and career

Lenzi was born in Massa Marittima, Grosseto, southern Tuscany. He is the writer/director of two highly controversial exploitation films: ''Eaten Alive!'' (1980) and ''Cannibal Ferox'' (1981) as well as the director of the film adaptation of the Italian comic book ''Kriminal'' (1966). He was one of the first Italian directors to get involved in the Giallo film craze (along with Mario Bava and Dario Argento), and his ''Man From Deep River'' is credited as being the film that started the Italian "cannibal film" genre later popularized by Ruggero Deodato, Jess Franco and others. Lenzi has claimed in interviews however that he was never too enamored of the cannibal films he made, being much prouder of his war films, his police crime films and his westerns. Lenzi has said in interviews that ''Man From Deep River'' was his best cannibal film (he said he only did the other two to make a quick buck), and his favorite ''giallos'' were ''Orgasmo'' and ''Seven Blood-Stained Orchids''. He said ''Black Demons'' was another of his all-time favorites, a "potential masterpiece" marred only by the poor acting of the female lead he was forced to work with.

Two films called ''Paranoia''

Umberto Lenzi's ''Orgasmo'' (1969) was retitled ''Paranoia'' when it was released in the USA, and it was so successful under that title, the Italian producers asked Lenzi to make another giallo called ''Paranoia'' to be distributed in Italy. The second film was later retitled ''A Quiet Place to Kill'' in the USA.

The Italian ''La Casa'' horror film series

Umberto Lenzi directed ''Ghosthouse'' in 1988 (''La Casa 3 - Ghosthouse''), but many of his fans do not know why it was released as ''La Casa 3'' in Italy. The American films ''The Evil Dead'' and ''Evil Dead 2'' were released in Italy as ''La Casa'' and ''La Casa 2'' respectively. Lenzi's film ''Ghosthouse'' was designed as a sort of sequel to these two high-grossing fan favorites, and thus was released in theatres there as ''La Casa 3''. The same year, Fabrizio Laurenti directed ''Witchery'' (starring Linda Blair) which was released in Italy as ''La Casa 4'' and was followed several years later by Claudio Fragasso's ''La Casa 5: Beyond Darkness'' (not to be confused with Joe D'Amato's "Beyond The Darkness").

Colin James Farrell (born 31 May 1976) is an Irish actor, who has appeared in such films as ''Tigerland'', ''Miami Vice'', ''Minority Report'', ''Phone Booth'', ''The Recruit'', ''Alexander'' and ''S.W.A.T.''. In 2008 he received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his role in ''In Bruges''.

Early life

Farrell was born in Dublin, the son of Rita (née Monaghan), a housewife, and Eamon Farrell, a footballer who played for Shamrock Rovers F.C. and owned a company importing and exporting canned goods in Dublin City. He was raised as a Roman Catholic. His uncle Tommy Farrell also played for Rovers. Farrell has two sisters, Claudine (who is his personal assistant) and Catherine, and a brother, Eamon Jr. When he was ten, the Farrells moved to Castleknock, a Dublin suburb. Farrell was educated at St. Brigid's National School Castleknock followed by Castleknock College and Gormanston College. Farrell unsuccessfully auditioned for the Irish group Boyzone when he was still unknown. Farrell attended The Gaiety School of Acting, but dropped out and was cast in the part of Danny Byrne on ''Ballykissangel'', a BBC television drama. Farrell appeared on the show seven times from 1998 to 1999. He was inspired to try acting after being brought to tears while watching ''E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial''.

Career

Farrell had small parts in television shows and films, including the BBC drama ''Ballykissangel'' in 1998, and his film debut in Tim Roth's ''The War Zone''. In 2000, he was cast in the lead role of Private Roland Bozz in ''Tigerland'', an American film directed by Joel Schumacher. Farrell's next American films, ''American Outlaws'' (2001) and ''Hart's War'' (2002), were not commercially successful, but his 2003 films, including ''Phone Booth'', ''S.W.A.T.'', and ''The Recruit'' were well-received box office successes. Although he has a pronounced Irish accent, Farrell uses an American accent in some of his films including ''American Outlaws'' and his breakthrough role, ''Tigerland''.

Farrell roles as a supporting actor include his performances as an ambitious cop who chases after a potential criminal, played by actor Tom Cruise, in ''Minority Report'' (2002), and as the skilled villain Bullseye in ''Daredevil'' (2003). Matt Damon was originally offered the ''Minority Report'' role but he turned it down to appear in ''Ocean's Eleven''. Farrell said "he had no problem" that people knew he was the producer's fall back pick after Damon declined. The character of Bullseye is that of an assassin with perfect accuracy and deep-rooted pride of it. Farrell was attached to this role in December 2001, though initially he was considered for the lead role as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, until Ben Affleck signed. Farrell was encouraged to keep his Irish accent as this version of Bullseye is from Ireland. Farrell had to read into Frank Miller's Daredevil comics to understand Bullseye "because the expression on the character's faces in the comic books, and just the way they move sometimes, and the exaggerations of the character I'm playing […] he's so over-the-top that you do draw from that. But it's not exactly a character you can do method acting for... you know, running around New York killing people with paper clips."

In late 2003, Farrell starred as a criminal who plots a bank heist with Cillian Murphy in the comedy ''Intermission'', which held the record as highest-grossing Irish independent film in Irish box office history until 2006. In 2004, Farrell appeared in several independent films that received only a limited theatrical release in most countries, including ''A Home at the End of the World'', which received some positive reviews. Farrell appeared in the title role of Alexander the Great in Oliver Stone's 2004 biographical film ''Alexander'', which, while receiving some favourable reviews internationally, was poorly received in the United States. It was marked by controversy for portraying the ancient conqueror as bisexual, and received criticism from some historians for its portrayal of the ancient Persians, though others praised it for its accuracy in these regards as well. The movie grossed a total of $167 million worldwide, despite its poor showing within the United States, just exceeding its budget of $155 million.

Farrell's next film was 2005's Academy Award-nominated ''The New World'', also a historical epic that was met with mixed reviews. Farrell played the leading role of Captain John Smith, the founder of 17th century colonial Jamestown, Virginia who falls in love with a beautiful Native American princess, Pocahontas, played by Q'Orianka Kilcher. The film received positive reviews, despite being released in only 811 theatres worldwide and having a relatively low box office gross.

''The New World'' was followed by ''Ask the Dust'', a romance film set in period Los Angeles and co-starring Salma Hayek. It received a very limited theatrical release and was not a financial success. 2006 brought more success in Farrell's career, as he appeared opposite Jamie Foxx in Michael Mann's action-crime film ''Miami Vice''. The film was a box office success grossing a total of US $164 million worldwide. Farrell was next seen in Woody Allen's ''Cassandra's Dream'', which premiered in 2007 and was distributed in the U.S. in early 2008. Farrell's next film, Martin McDonagh's ''In Bruges'', opened the Sundance Film Festival in 2008; Farrell received his first Golden Globe nomination and win for his role as Ray, a hired hitman. Shortly thereafter, he appeared in ''Kicking It'', a documentary following six homeless men from different countries as they attempt to qualify for the Homeless World Cup. Farrell appeared on screen and provided narration. The film released simultaneously in theatres and television, airing on ESPN2 with a very short window to DVD release. Farrell received positive press for his involvement in the heartwarming true-life tale, and enthusiastic reviews for the two dramatic roles that preceded it.

On 11 January 2009, he won the Golden Globe award for Best Actor: Musical or Comedy for his role in ''In Bruges'', in which he co-starred with Brendan Gleeson. The same year, he starred in Terry Gilliam's film ''The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus'', alongside Christopher Plummer. He was one of the actors, along with Johnny Depp and Jude Law, who helped complete the late Heath Ledger's role after he died before filming ended. They all played "Imaginarium" versions of Ledger's character Tony. He also took a supporting role as Tommy Sweet in ''Crazy Heart'', alongside Academy Award-winning Jeff Bridges.

2010 saw the release of ''Ondine'', a fantasy-drama directed by Neil Jordan, which stars Farrell as a fisherman. It also saw him star opposite Keira Knightley in the crime / romance ''London Boulevard''. The film was directed by William Monahan, screenplay writer of ''The Departed'' and ''Body of Lies''.

Farrell starred in the 2011 comedy movie ''Horrible Bosses'', with Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman and Jason Sudeikis, directed by Seth Gordon. The film focuses on a trio of employees who plot to murder their titular tyrannical supervisors. Later that year, Farrell played the lead role in the ''Fright Night'' remake. Farrell joined Anton Yelchin, David Tennant, and Toni Collette in this story about a charismatic vampire who moves in next to a high school student. The film was released by Dreamworks, with Craig Gillespie having directed.

Upcoming films

Farrell is involved in a film adaptation of Flann O'Brien's metafictional novel ''At Swim-Two-Birds'' alongside Cillian Murphy and Gabriel Byrne. Actor Brendan Gleeson will direct the film, which was scheduled for release in 2010. In October 2009, however, Gleeson expressed fear that, should the Irish Film Board be abolished as planned by the Irish State, the production may fall through.

Additionally, Farrell stars in Columbia Pictures' remake of ''Total Recall'' which filmed from May to September 2011 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Directed by Len Wiseman, the film is a new take on the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi picture about a sleeper agent who is compelled to travel to a colony on Mars. Kurt Wimmer (Salt) wrote the script, which like the original is based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale."

Personal life

Colin Farrell was reportedly married to English actress Amelia Warner from July 2001 to November 2001. However, in December 2011, Amelia Warner said that the marriage ceremony was not legal.

Colin and British writer Emma Forrest dated for over a year, an experience she discusses in depth in her memoir Your Voice In My Head. According to Forrest, they had planned to have a child together, before he ended the relationship.

Colin and US model Kim Bordenave became parents of James Padraig Farrell, born in 2003, in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles. In October 2007, Farrell revealed that his son has Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterised by intellectual and developmental delay.

Farrell and ''Ondine'' co-star Alicja Bachleda-Curus have a son, Henry Tadeusz Farrell, born in October 2009 One year after the birth of their son, Alicja Bachleda Curus and Colin Farrell decided to end their relationship.

Friendship with Elizabeth Taylor

Farrell had reportedly grown very close to Elizabeth Taylor shortly before her death and was one of the few non-family members to attend her private funeral. He recited the poem The Leaden Echo and The Golden Echo by Gerard Manley Hopkins at her funeral, requested by Taylor herself.

Drug addictions

In December 2005, Farrell voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation treatment center for addictions to recreational drugs and painkillers. His publicist commented that Farrell had started taking painkillers due to a back injury.

Sex tape

In July 2006, Farrell filed a lawsuit suing his former girlfriend, Playboy model Nicole Narain, and the Internet Commerce Group (ICG) over the unauthorised public distribution of a 14-minute sex tape that Farrell made with Narain in 2003. It was leaked to ICG who tried to release it publicly. A Los Angeles judge issued an injunction barring the sale, distribution, or display of the tape.

Narain claimed that she did not give the tape to anyone and was not sure if or how copies were taken from her. She originally said that she would work with Farrell to ensure that it remained private, but Farrell said that Narain was trying to release it in order to damage his acting career and "make money out of it", which Narain denies.

A trial date for the Narain lawsuit was set for 17 July 2006, but the judge allowed Farrell and Nicole to mediate until 20 April. On 16 April, the two reached a settlement with confidential terms. However, Farrell's lawsuit against ICG continued with a trial date set for 21 July 2006.

Stalker incidents

Farrell has been sued twice for alleged harassment and sending abusive messages to telephone sex worker Dessarae Bradford. The lawsuits were later dismissed due to a lack of evidence provided by Bradford. Bradford, who has announced that she is "waging war on Colin Farrell", has recorded a song entitled "Colin Farrell is My Bitch" and has self-published a book called ''Colin Farrell: A Dark Twisted Puppy''.

Bradford failed a lie detector test on an i TV program in an attempt to support her claims and stories.

On 20 July 2006, as Farrell was being interviewed by Jay Leno on the set of ''The Tonight Show'', Bradford evaded security, walked on stage as cameras were rolling, confronted Farrell, and threw her book on Leno's desk. In front of a silent, stunned audience, Farrell escorted her off the stage himself, told the camera crew to stop filming, and handed her over to security. As Bradford was led out of the studio, she shouted "I'll see you in court." Farrell's response was, "Darling, you're insane!" Outside the studio, NBC security handed her to Burbank police, who eventually released her. After Farrell apologised to the audience, describing Bradford as "my first stalker", the show then continued filming and the incident was edited out of the broadcast aired that night. The following day, Farrell obtained a restraining order against Bradford.

Celebrity status

Farrell was named one of ''People'' magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" in 2003. He was also voted sixth in the World's "Sexiest Man" contest by ''Company'' magazine that same year.

In 2007, Farrell joined other celebrities to become an official games spokesman for the Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai, China.

Brendan Gleeson (born 29 March 1955) is an Irish actor. His best-known films include ''Braveheart'', ''Gangs of New York'', ''In Bruges'', ''28 Days Later'', ''Troy'', the ''Harry Potter'' films, ''The Guard'' and the role of Michael Collins in ''The Treaty''. He won an Emmy Award in 2009 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the film ''Into the Storm''.

Early life

Gleeson was born in Dublin, the son of Pat and Frank Gleeson. Gleeson has described himself as having been an avid reader as a child. Later, after training as an actor, he returned to Ireland and worked for several years as a secondary school teacher of Irish and English at the now defunct Catholic Belcamp College in North County Dublin, which closed in 2004. He was working simultaneously as an actor while teaching, doing semi-professional and professional productions in Dublin and surrounding areas. He left the teaching profession to commit full-time to acting in 1991.

Career

Gleeson started his film career at the age of 34. He first came to prominence in Ireland for his role as Michael Collins in ''The Treaty'', a television film broadcast on RTÉ One, and for which he won a Jacob's Award in 1992. He has acted in such films as ''Braveheart'', ''I Went Down'', ''Michael Collins'', ''Gangs of New York'', ''Cold Mountain'', ''28 Days Later'', ''Troy'', ''Kingdom of Heaven'', ''Lake Placid'', ''Artificial Intelligence: AI'', ''Mission: Impossible II'' and ''The Village''. He won critical acclaim for his performance as Irish gangster Martin Cahill in John Boorman's 1998 film ''The General''.

In 2003, Gleeson was the voice of Hugh the Miller in an episode of the Channel 4 animated series ''Wilde Stories''.

While Gleeson portrayed Irish statesman Michael Collins in ''The Treaty'', he later portrayed Collins' close collaborator Liam Tobin in the film ''Michael Collins'' with Liam Neeson taking the role of Collins. Gleeson later went on to portray Winston Churchill in ''Into the Storm''. Gleeson won an Emmy Award for his performance. Gleeson played Hogwarts professor Mad-Eye Moody in the fourth, fifth and seventh Harry Potter films. His son Domhnall played Bill Weasley in the seventh film.

Gleeson provided the voice of Abbot Cellach in ''The Secret of Kells'', an animated film co-directed by Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey of Cartoon Saloon which premiered in February 2009 at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.

Gleeson starred in the short film ''Six Shooter'' in 2006, which won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. This film was written and directed by Martin McDonagh who also wrote and directed ''In Bruges'' in 2008. The film, and Gleeson's performance, enjoyed huge critical acclaim, earning Gleeson several award nominations, including his first Golden Globe nomination. In the movie, Gleeson plays a mentor-like figure for Colin Farrell's hitman. In his review of ''In Bruges'', ''Roger Ebert'' described the elder Gleeson as having a "noble shambles of a face and the heft of a boxer gone to seed."

Gleeson will be making his directorial debut in a film adaptation of Flann O'Brien's novel ''At Swim Two Birds''. The Irish production company Parallel Pictures will produce the film with a budget of $11 million. Colin Farrell, Gabriel Byrne, and Cillian Murphy have been attached to star in the film, which is set for release in 2010. In October, 2009, however, Gleeson expressed concern that the Irish Film Board's budget might be reduced given the state of the Irish economy and that ''At Swim Two Birds'' might fall through. Gleeson confirmed in July, 2011, that he has secured funding for the project. He described the writing of the script as torturous and that it has taken fourteen drafts so far.

Personal life

Gleeson is a fiddle player, with an interest in Irish folklore. He played the fiddle during his role in ''Cold Mountain'' and in ''Michael Collins'', and also features on Altan's 2009 live album. His brother, Barry Gleeson, is a well-known singer in An Góilín traditional singers' club, and his sons Domhnall and Brian are also actors.

Paul Stephen Rudd (born April 6, 1969) is an American actor, comedian and screenwriter. He has primarily appeared in comedies, and is known for his roles in the films ''Clueless'', ''Wet Hot American Summer'', ''Anchorman'', ''Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers'', ''The 40-Year-Old Virgin'', ''Knocked Up'', ''Forgetting Sarah Marshall'', ''Dinner for Schmucks'', ''The Object of My Affection'', ''Role Models'', ''I Love You, Man'', and ''Our Idiot Brother''. In television, he appeared on the NBC sitcom ''Friends'', playing Mike Hannigan, Phoebe Buffay's boyfriend and later husband, and is commonly featured on the Tim and Eric show.

Early life

Rudd was born in Passaic, New Jersey. His parents, both natives of London (England), were Jewish, and were descended from immigrants from Russia and Poland; the family's original surname, "Rudnitzky", was changed by his grandfather to "Rudd". Rudd had a bar mitzvah. His father, Michael, was a historical tour guide who was formerly the vice president of World Airways, while his mother, Gloria, was a sales manager at the television station KSMO-TV. When he was ten, Rudd's family moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where he was raised; his family also spent three years living in Anaheim, California, because of his father's occupation. He attended high school at Shawnee Mission West and college at the University of Kansas, where he was a member of the Nu Chapter of Sigma Nu. He spent three months studying Jacobean drama at the British American Drama Academy based in Oxford, U.K.

Career

Rudd made his breakout performance in the 1995 film ''Clueless'', which turned him into a minor teen idol. Additional early-career credits include ''Wet Hot American Summer'', ''Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers'', ''The Cider House Rules'', ''William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet'', and ''The Object of My Affection''. He also garnered recognition with a recurring role on the television sitcom ''Friends'' as Mike Hannigan, who married Phoebe Buffay. Rudd's Broadway acting credits include ''The Last Night of Ballyhoo'' (1997), ''Twelfth Night'' (1998), and ''Three Days of Rain'' (2006). He guest-starred as a has-been 1990s rock star, Desmond Fellows, on the television series, ''Veronica Mars'', in an episode titled "Debasement Tapes". He voiced the audiobook recordings of John Hodgman's books ''The Areas of My Expertise'' and ''More Information Than You Require''. In 2006, he appeared in several episodes of ''Reno 911!'' as "Guy Gerricault" (pronounced "''jericho''"), the coach of a lamaze class, and portrayed a drug lord in the film ''Reno 911!: Miami''. In 2012 he signed to appear on three episodes of NBC's ''Parks and Recreation'' as Bobby Newport, a candidate for City Council and a rival of Amy Poehler's character Leslie Knope.

Rudd became a full-fledged comedy star with his roles in Judd Apatow pictures ''The 40-Year-Old Virgin'' (directed by Apatow) and ''Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy'' (produced by Apatow). In 2007, he starred as frustrated husband Pete in ''Knocked Up'', his third collaboration with Apatow and Seth Rogen. That year he also starred in indie favorite ''The Oh in Ohio'' and ''The Ten'', which reunited him with David Wain and Michael Showalter. The former film was a box-office and critical disappointment as was his next starring vehicle, ''Over Her Dead Body'' with Eva Longoria. He bounced back with a memorable supporting role as Kunu (Hawaiian for "Chuck"), the drug-addled surf instructor in Nicholas Stoller's ''Forgetting Sarah Marshall'' which also starred Jason Segel and was produced by Apatow. The film was a hit, as was his next comedy ''Role Models'', where he and co-star Seann William Scott portrayed energy-drink salesmen forced to perform community service in a child mentoring program. Rudd also made cameo appearances in ''Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story'', ''Year One'' and ''Night at the Museum''.

In 2009, Rudd again appeared with Jason Segel in ''I Love You Man''. He lent his voice to the star-studded Dreamworks computer-animated hit movie ''Monsters Vs. Aliens''. In 2010, he reunited with Steve Carell for the first time since ''Knocked Up'', ''The 40 Year Old Virgin'', and ''Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy'' for the Jay Roach-directed comedy ''Dinner for Schmucks'', which also featured Zach Galifinakis and Ron Livingston.

Rudd has become one of the most popular and marketable stars of Judd Apatow's films and others in the same vein, starring often with other Apatow regulars like Seth Rogen (four films), Jonah Hill (three films), Leslie Mann (three films), Kristen Wiig (three films), Jason Segel (three films), Steve Carell (four films), Elizabeth Banks (five films), and Joe Lo Truglio (seven films).

Running gags on television

As part of a running gag during his appearances on ''Late Night with Conan O'Brien'', ''The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien'' and ''Conan'', Rudd has brought a clip from the film ''Mac and Me'', where the wheelchair-using Eric (Jade Calegory) flies off a cliff while Mac watches on, instead of showing clips from the actual film he is there to promote. He also has appeared on stage for Conan O'Brien's live tour.

Rudd also has a running gag on ''Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'' in which Rudd and Jimmy Fallon appear to be setting up a clip from a film Rudd is appearing in. The clip that follows, however, is a clip from ''Late Show with David Letterman'' in which Rudd, in an earlier appearance, and David Letterman set up the clip verbatim to how Rudd and Fallon appeared to set up the clip.

Personal life

In 2003, Rudd married his girlfriend of five years, Julie Yaeger; they have a son, Jack Sullivan, and a daughter, Darby, and live in New York, New York. Rudd frequently travels to Overland Park, Kansas, where he attended high school. He is a fan of Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals and National Football League's Kansas City Chiefs, for whom he narrated the 2007 HBO special ''Hard Knocks''. He also frequents University of Kansas basketball games is a big fan of the Jayhawks.
